The Atatürk Museum House is located within the Çankaya Campus of the Presidency in Ankara. It was used by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk as both a residence and a workplace between 1921 and 1932. This house served as the official residence of Gazi Mustafa Kemal until his move to the Pink House and hosted significant developments during the War of Independence and the early years of the Republic. In 1950 it was converted into a museum and opened to the public.

Origin and Structural Development of the House

After arriving in Ankara on 27 December 1919, Atatürk first used the School of Agriculture and then the Station Master’s House. However, as these buildings proved insufficient, on 30 May 1921 the Ankara Municipality gifted him a country house in Çankaya.

In its original form the house was a small rectangular structure with a stone ground floor containing two rooms and an upper floor with a central hall and two additional rooms. Following Atatürk’s marriage to Latife Hanım in 1923, the existing structure was found inadequate, prompting architect Vedat Tek to design an extension completed in 1924. A two-story addition was constructed on the southern façade, with new spaces designated as a dining room, bedroom, study, bathroom, and library.

In 1926 a heating system was installed, and above the laundry and kitchen areas designated for staff and spiritual children, six additional rooms and a bathroom were added. In 1930 the tower section was converted into a second study room.

Restoration Works

Between 2002 and 2007 comprehensive maintenance and repair works were carried out to preserve the building and its furnishings, and the house was once again exhibited as a lived-in space. Restoration was completed and the house reopened to visitors on 19 April 2007.

Architectural Sections and Functions

Rüzgârlık

Added to the northern façade during the 1923–1924 expansion.

Entrance Hall

The original stone area, which once housed an ornamental fountain, was covered over and converted into an entrance hall where visitors wait before being guided.

Guest Reception Room (Green Room)

Originally used as Atatürk’s study, this section was converted into a guest reception room following the 1923–1924 renovations. It is known as the Green Room due to its dominant green decor. Diplomatic spouses and other guests were hosted here during tea receptions.

Çankaya Dining Table (Dining Room)

The dining room of the house served as the venue for discussions on state affairs and is known as the Çankaya Dining Table. The tableware features the monograms “GMK” and “KA”. Notebooks on the table indicate that this space also functioned as a working area.

Ambassador Reception Room

Located on the ground floor, this is the room where newly appointed ambassadors presented their letters of credence to Atatürk.

Located on the upper floor with a view of Ankara, this room was occupied by Atatürk’s mother, Zübeyde Hanım. After her death, it was used as a guest room and resting area.

Upper Floor Hall

The spacious hall, created in 1924 after the stone area was covered, includes a billiard table brought from Paris.

This section, housing 2,671 books, was arranged as both a library and a study room. Much of the “Nutuk” was written here. The books are in various languages and cover diverse subjects.

Study Room

The second study room, renovated in 1930, is in the Art Deco style.

Bedroom and Bathroom

Located on the upper level of the 1924 extension, this room provides direct access to a private bathroom. Its floor and walls are covered with white tiles.
