Silahtar Mustafa Pasha Caravanserai

Silahtar Mustafa Paşa Kervansarayı is a caravanserai from the Ottoman period located in the Battalgazi district of Malatya province. The structure is situated along historical trade routes in Anatolia and forms part of the network of buildings constructed to meet the accommodation and logistical needs of travelers and merchant caravans within the Ottoman transportation and lodging system.

Silahtar Mustafa Paşa Kervansarayı was commissioned by Silahtar Mustafa Paşa, who held various offices in the Ottoman state. The exact date of construction is unknown. The structure is classified as a waqf property dating to the Ottoman period.

During the Ottoman period, caravanserais were structures designed to provide lodging shelter and security for long-distance trade. Due to its location along trade routes passing through Malatya and its surroundings, Silahtar Mustafa Paşa Kervansarayı served as accommodation for travelers merchants and animals. It functioned as a public building contributing to the continuity of regional commercial activity.

The caravanserai is built on a rectangular plan measuring 68 by 76 metres. According to sources it comprises 170 rooms. This layout was designed to accommodate large numbers of travelers and caravans simultaneously.

The structure was built using cut stone. The stone walls were constructed with considerable thickness to enhance durability. Rooms and other spaces were arranged in accordance with the caravanserai’s functional requirements and a simple utilitarian architectural approach prevails throughout the building. These characteristics reflect typical features of Ottoman-period caravanserai architecture.

Silahtar Mustafa Paşa Kervansarayı is located in Battalgazi district one of the historical settlement areas of Malatya. Battalgazi emerged as an important administrative and commercial center during the Seljuk and Ottoman periods. The construction of the caravanserai in this region is linked to Malatya’s longstanding role within regional transportation and trade networks.

During the Republican era as part of efforts to preserve cultural heritage Silahtar Mustafa Paşa Kervansarayı was registered as an immovable cultural asset requiring protection. Various restoration and maintenance works have been carried out over different periods to preserve its original architectural features.

Today the caravanserai is open to visitors as a historical and cultural structure. It is used for extracurricular educational activities cultural tours and promotional events organized by educational institutions. In this capacity the building contributes to the transmission of cultural memory through a usage distinct from its original historical function.
