Positive and Negative Effects of Artificial Intelligence in Designing Materials for Children

In today’s world, it is a fact that artificial intelligence is used in educational models. Benefiting from this system is now unavoidable in education, software, and numerous other sectors. The most active and productive use of artificial intelligence is visibly evident wherever it makes human tasks easier. Today’s teachers frequently rely on artificial intelligence. Even as a university student, I often seek assistance from artificial intelligence when preparing teaching materials. As a result, when creating these materials, we may encounter both positive and negative aspects for teachers.

We can clearly observe the use of artificial intelligence by teachers, especially when preparing teaching materials. It saves them time and helps increase the number of materials they can produce, thereby enhancing instruction through greater availability of resources for students. Additionally, by using their time more efficiently, teachers gain more time for themselves, which can contribute to their psychological well-being. I would like to give the example of my older brother, who works as a teacher. He frequently uses artificial intelligence, and through him, I have acquired substantial knowledge on this topic. He said, “One day, while teaching my students the topic of ‘Active and Passive Voice,’ I noticed that despite repeated explanations, they still struggled to understand it. As a result, I asked an artificial intelligence program to suggest some materials on this topic. The AI proposed an activity where students had to create a zoo in which each animal could only escape its cage by matching it with specific words. Through this, students were able to identify the correct grammar rule and free the animals. Consequently, I observed that whenever students encountered difficulty, they referred back to this zoo metaphor.” He provided many similar examples. As university students, we also took courses from our professors on the proper use of artificial intelligence in our “Information Technologies” class and were encouraged to apply these tools in our work.

Of course, it is essential not to overemphasize the role of “seeking assistance” when using these tools. Excessive reliance on artificial intelligence may reduce the creativity of both teachers and students. If we depend on artificial intelligence for every task and use it beyond what is necessary, we may eventually reach a point where we cannot function without it. In other words, since artificial intelligence provides the same answers to the same questions, we may ultimately be left with limited and repetitive data. Moreover, the accuracy of information provided by artificial intelligence must always be verified. Regardless of the source, the materials generated by artificial intelligence may not always be suitable for students. It must be remembered that no artificial intelligence system can understand a student better than a teacher can.

In conclusion, artificial intelligence offers significant benefits in the production of teaching materials and in other tasks performed by teachers. It saves time and increases the volume of materials produced. It can generate games that students will enjoy and find engaging. However, certain precautions must be taken when using artificial intelligence. Excessive use may impair creative abilities. Additionally, responses generated by artificial intelligence must be carefully reviewed, because even though it is a human-made program, it can still make mistakes. Everything we do is ultimately for the benefit of our students.
