Meram Science High School

Meram Fen Lisesi is a public secondary education institution located in the Meram district of Konya province, Türkiye, providing education to students in the fields of science and mathematics. The institution aims to develop its students into individuals open to scientific and technological innovation, academically oriented, and prepared for higher education institutions.^【1】

Meram Fen Lisesi began its operations in the 1989–1990 academic year. Its establishment was formalized following a letter dated 23 March 1989 from the Konya Governorship (No. 315/11209) and the approval dated 11 September 1989 from the General Directorate of Secondary Education of the Ministry of National Education of Türkiye (No. 20965). At its founding, the school commenced educational services with one principal, seventeen teachers, four administrative staff, and six service personnel.^【2】

The institution is a public school under the Ministry of National Education of Türkiye. Its institutional vision is to prepare high-achieving students in science and mathematics for higher education programs by equipping them with contemporary and democratic values to become scientists and academics. Its mission is to foster individual talents, encourage students to approach problems using scientific methods, and cultivate impartial individuals with leadership qualities.^【3】

The language of instruction at Meram Fen Lisesi is Turkish, and compulsory foreign language education is provided in English. Educational activities take place between 09:00 and 16:00. The curriculum is structured around core scientific disciplines including physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics.^【4】

Student admissions are based on scores from the centralized examination system. Analysis of base score data between 2014 and 2025 reveals that the lowest base score was 424.775 in 2018 and the highest was 494.708 in 2017. The school’s annual student capacity is set at 150 students.^【5】

The institution is located in the Alpaslan neighborhood of Meram district in Konya. Heating is provided through a natural gas-fired central heating system. The school’s physical facilities include an indoor sports hall, outdoor sports areas suitable for basketball, volleyball, and tennis, exercise equipment, and a boxing training area. Internet access is provided via ADSL connection.^【6】

The current administrative and staff structure consists of four administrators, twenty-six teachers, three clerical staff, one technician, one driver, one guard, and four service personnel.^【7】

Meram Fen Lisesi implements a mixed model of boarding and day student education. The student profile consists of individuals with high academic achievement and a propensity for scientific work. Graduates have historically gained admission to faculties such as Medicine, Engineering, Dentistry, Law, and Business Administration. The school’s academic history includes Türkiye’s first place in the 1992 ÖYS national university entrance exam (Nejat Kamacı) and Türkiye’s first place in the 2003 ÖSS exam by correctly answering all questions (Emre Kaçar). According to 2023 data, the university placement rate was 92 percent, and in 2024 it was 69 percent.^【8】

The institution has achieved notable results in sports, including third place in the provincial basketball competition, second place in Konya table tennis, and first place in Konya chess. In cultural activities, it has won first, second, and third place in the national "Europe at School" painting competition. Additionally, in 2009 and 2012, it received regional and national rankings in European Union short story competitions, including third place nationally. First-place awards have also been achieved at the provincial level in composition competitions held on significant occasions such as Teacher’s Day on 24 November and the Adoption of the Independence March.^【9】

Meram Fen Lisesi actively participates in national and international scientific projects. It has won gold, silver, and bronze medals in physics and mathematics categories of the TÜBİTAK Science Olympiads. In 2022, under TEKNOFEST, it achieved first place in Türkiye in the "Climate Research" category and third place in the "Polar Research" category. In 2023 and 2024, it was among the Turkish teams selected to participate in the "Beamline For Schools (BL4S)" competition organized by CERN and DESY. Additionally, in 2019, it won a silver medal at the 51st International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO).^【10】
