Sir Nils Olav III

Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland has, as part of an international tradition spanning decades, served as the home to the official mascot of the Norwegian Royal Guard (Hans Majestet Kongens Garde)^【1】, a king penguin named Sir Nils Olav III. In August 2023, this symbolic military figure was promoted to the rank of Major General within the Norwegian armed forceshierarchy, becoming a symbol of the bond between Norway and Scotland.

Sir Nils Olav III’s promotion was publicly announced during an official military ceremony held at Edinburgh Zoo in August 2023. The ceremony was attended by 160 uniformed soldiers from the band of the Norwegian Royal Guard.

The ceremony continued with the penguin inspecting the military contingent. Norwegian soldiers stated that Sir Nils Olav III had earned this promotion due to his “good conduct and demeanor.” Upon completion of the inspection, the insignia symbolizing the rank of Major General was placed on the penguin’s wing by a soldier. With this promotion, Sir Nils Olav III officially became the highest-ranking penguin in the Norwegian Armed Forces.

Sir Nils Olav’s military career is rooted in a tradition dating back to 1972 between Norway and Scotland. This symbolic relationship began when the Norwegian Royal Guard adopted a penguin during their visit to Edinburgh in 1972.

The current mascot is the third penguin to hold this title and is known as Sir Nils Olav III. His military career has steadily advanced:

• 2008: He was knighted and granted the title of Sir.
• 2016: He was promoted to the rank of Brigadier.

Norwegian guardsmen visit Scotland every few years to participate in the international Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo^【2】 event. During these visits, they have made it a tradition to visit their high-ranking mascot at the zoo and review his “military career.” Sir Nils Olav III’s most recent promotion represents the latest chapter in this enduring tradition.
