Photoprism

PhotoPrism is an open-source photo management application developed by PhotoPrism UG, based in Germany. With AI-powered search and classification systems, it enables users to organize their photo and video archives on their own servers. The platform is designed to be compatible with decentralized web technologies and prioritizes the privacy of user data. The application can be run on Docker, DigitalOcean, FreeBSD, Raspberry Pi, and various NAS devices.

PhotoPrism was founded in 2018 by Michael Mayer and Theresa Gresch. Michael Mayer began his software career in the open-source community in the 1990s and has spent many years providing consulting services to corporate clients. Theresa Gresch holds a master’s degree in neurobiology and has worked in project management and machine learning. The team also includes contributors such as Dr. Andrea Ceroni, a data scientist from Leibniz University serving as a scientific advisor, and Guy Sheffer, a developer specializing in Raspberry Pi.

PhotoPrism is equipped with a range of advanced features that allow users to organize their digital visual content. The platform automatically tags photos and enriches them with location data to provide a powerful search infrastructure. Images can be filtered by their content, location, resolution, color, and other metadata. The system also includes facial recognition capabilities, grouping individuals in images to enable easy access.

PhotoPrism supports many popular image and video formats including JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, HEIF, HEIC, MP4, MOV, WebP, and WebM. It can also index and convert RAW files from various camera brands. With FFmpeg support, the system can convert video codecs to the MPEG-4 AVC format and generate small preview images from stills.

Integration with the PhotoSync application enables backup of visuals from mobile devices. Through the WebDAV protocol, users can directly open, edit, or delete files from their own computers. Album sharing can be done via encrypted links without requiring registration, and time limits can be set for these links.

PhotoPrism places user data privacy at the forefront and does not share user data with companies such as Google, Amazon, Microsoft, or Apple. When installed on a user’s own server, all data can be processed entirely locally without ever leaving the network. The system is also compliant with the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) and conducts data analytics using the open-source Plausible Analytics tool in a privacy-sensitive manner.

The “Gallery for PhotoPrism” application, developed for Android, allows users to view images on a timeline and share them with other apps. The “Photo Map” application displays the location data of photos on an interactive world map. The MapTiler infrastructure is used as the mapping service, which retains only temporary IP address logs.

The source code of PhotoPrism is publicly accessible via GitHub. Developers can contribute to the project through translation, bug reporting, and development of new features. The system is managed under open-source licenses and is supported by comprehensive developer documentation.

PhotoPrism’s development roadmap is shared with the community. Planned new features include automatic album creation from public event databases and advanced facial recognition algorithms. Users can contribute to setting development priorities by voting on proposed features.
