Green Tomb

Yeşil Türbe is a historical tomb located in the Yıldırım district of Bursa, in Türkiye’s Marmara Region. The tomb was constructed as part of the Green Külliye complex, one of Bursa’s most iconic landmarks.

Green Tomb, the Ottoman sultan I. Mehmed (Çelebi Mehmed), commissioned the tomb in 1421 shortly before his death. The architect was Hacı İvaz Paşa. The tomb was built according to Çelebi Mehmed’s will and contains the tombs of himself and several close family members.

Yeşil Türbe is an octagonal structure built of cut stone and brick. Its exterior walls are clad in turquoise-green tiles, a feature that gave the tomb its name, “Yeşil Türbe”. The interior is adorned with Iznik-style tiles and kalem işi decorative motifs. At the center of the main chamber lies the sarcophagus of Çelebi Mehmed, surrounded by eight additional sarcophagi belonging to his sons and daughters.

Yeşil Türbe is an important example of early Ottoman tomb architecture. The tile decorations and architectural details reflect the artistic sensibilities of the period. The tomb holds a significant place in Ottoman cultural heritage, both for its architectural design and its decorative arts.
