Emin Yoğurtcuoğlu is a Turkish birdwatcher, wildlife expert, photographer, author, nature guide, and field documentary filmmaker. He is known in the birdwatching community by the identity “Kuş Dedektifi” (Bird Detective). On social media, Yoğurtcuoğlu is recognized globally under the handle “birddetective”, producing content on birds, wildlife, migration routes, and ecosystems.

Education

Emin Yoğurtcuoğlu is a graduate of TED Ankara College. From childhood, he developed a strong fascination with natural phenomena, geology, geography, space, animals, and especially birds. He began birdwatching at the age of 12 and kept his first observation records during this period.

His first birdwatching experiences were gained by observing birds in Altınpark, located in central Ankara. He later expanded his field experience at a young age by conducting observations in areas around Ankara such as Mogan Lake, Kızılcahamam forests, and Kulu Lake in Konya. During middle school and high school, he became deeply engaged in birdwatching and photography.

He enrolled in the Tourism and Hospitality program at Başkent University but soon abandoned it, feeling it was not suited to his interests. Over the next two years, he traveled across various regions of Türkiye and different parts of the world, conducting nature observations. During this time, he volunteered with numerous nature projects, notably with the Nature Association (Doğa Derneği), focusing intensively on fieldwork related to birds and wildlife.

As of the end of 2025, he has observed and photographed 460 of the 505 bird species recorded in Türkiye. Between 2005 and 2022, through fieldwork in Hakkari, Hatay, Ankara, Samsun, and other regions of Türkiye, he documented the first recorded sightings of 14 bird species in the country.

He has carried out long-term fieldwork across Türkiye’s diverse ecosystems, with particular focus on migration routes, wetlands, and rare species.

In his work, he does not merely document bird species but also seeks to illuminate the relationship between birds and humans. His “Bird Detective” approach is based on the idea of storytelling nature to broader audiences.

Noting that Türkiye had no sites listed on UNESCO’s World Natural Heritage List, he contributed to efforts aimed at securing the inclusion of the Kızılırmak Delta on UNESCO’s Permanent Natural Heritage List. As part of this initiative, he held an exhibition in Paris and delivered a lecture at UNESCO.

He is also known for his long-term fieldwork on the Milliha Wetland in Hatay, studying bird migrations, biodiversity, and wetland ecosystems. He actively participates in nature conservation and awareness campaigns. In addition to Türkiye, he conducts habitat protection work in several other countries.
