Bekir Sıtkı Bey (Ocak) was a teacher and member of parliament who was active in politics, religious sciences, and literature during the late Ottoman period and the early years of the Republic. He was born in Diyarbakır in 1885 and died in the same city on 11 January 1936. He served as the deputy for Siverek in the 1st Term of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye and continued the tradition of Divan literature in his literary works.
Bekir Sıtkı Bey received his early education from his father Mesut Efendi and local teachers and obtained his teaching certification in 1908. In 1910 he was appointed as the Nakībü’l-Eşrâf District Governor in Diyarbakır. He also served as a member of the Provincial General Council in Ergani and Çermik districts and as second deputy of the Diyarbakır General Council. Bekir Sıtkı Bey, who was fluent in Arabic and Persian, was married and had three children.
In 1919 he was elected as the deputy for Siverek to the Ottoman Chamber of Deputies. Although he set out for Ankara after the dissolution of the chamber in 1920, he fell ill in Samsun and returned to Diyarbakır. He was elected as the deputy for Siverek in the 1st Term of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye and joined the assembly on 25 April 1921. However, due to health problems he took leave on several occasions. According to assembly records he was granted leave six times and his parliamentary activities remained limited. His only jointly signed proposal concerned permitting those who had paid military tax to travel abroad.
Bekir Sıtkı Bey also had a literary dimension. In his poetry he continued the classical style of Divan literature. He is known to have translated a work titled Mihrabü’l-Vicdan and authored two unpublished works titled Eş’ar-ı Nefise and Muhaverat-ı Zarife. However, detailed information about these works is not available.
After completing his political and social duties, Bekir Sıtkı Bey returned to Diyarbakır in 1923, lived there until his death on 11 January 1936.
