World Day

Earth Day is an international observance held annually on 22 April to raise awareness of environmental issues, promote ecological consciousness, and foster public understanding of the need to protect the natural environment. The initiative first emerged in the United States in 1970 and gradually expanded globally, leading to the celebration of diverse events in numerous countries.

The origins of Earth Day are linked to growing societal awareness in the second half of the 20th century regarding the environmental impacts of industrialization. In the 1960s, the visible deterioration of air and water quality created a foundation for broader public discourse on environmental issues. The first Earth Day event, organized on 22 April 1970 under the leadership of U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, marked a significant development in the organization of environmental movements.

The inaugural Earth Day event mobilized 20 million Americans to take to streets, parks, and public gathering spaces, contributing to the strengthening of environmental policies and paving the way for the enactment of major environmental laws alongside the establishment of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the same year.^【1】 Starting in 1990, Earth Day acquired an international character and began to be observed simultaneously in different countries through coordinated activities.

Activities organized under Earth Day aim to raise awareness of environmental issues and encourage sustainable living practices. These include environmental cleanup campaigns, tree planting initiatives, educational programs, and public awareness campaigns.

Today, Earth Day activities are primarily centered around the following themes:

• Protection of wildlife and natural habitats

As of 2026, the theme of Earth Day has been designated as “Our Power, Our Planet”. This theme emphasizes that environmental progress depends not only on government policies but also on the shared responsibility of communities, educators, workers, and families.^【2】

Earth Day is now observed in more than 190 countries as a global environmental movement. Annual events organized around specific themes contribute to increasing international awareness of environmental issues. During this process, international organizations such as the United Nations also support the initiative through various environmental programs and awareness campaigns.
