To endure patiently
Have you ever felt that seconds drag on endlessly while waiting for your favorite toy to be repaired or for the cookies in the oven to bake? In those moments, the most important thing you need is the feeling of patience. However, there are times when waiting or enduring becomes so difficult that our patience runs out.
What Is Patience?
Patience is the ability to endure a difficult situation without giving up immediately, without complaining, and without losing hope. In fact, patience is the skill of waiting for something without rushing. For example, when you plant a sapling, you cannot expect it to become a tree right away; watering it at the right times and waiting for it to grow is an example of patience.【1】
What Does “Our Patience Runs Out” Mean?
Have you ever seen a glass fill with water until it overflows? This expression evokes exactly that image. Here, “patience” is like the water inside the glass. When something negative happens, more water is added to the glass. When the glass is completely full, the water begins to spill over—that is, it overflows.
We use this expression to describe moments when a person has waited for a very long time or silently endured a difficult situation but can no longer remain silent. Idioms are usually fixed phrases that carry figurative meanings beyond their literal sense. Imagine continuously pouring water into a glass. When the glass is completely full, even one more drop causes the water to spill over—that is, it overflows. Similarly, the expression our patience runs out is used to describe the moment when someone can no longer tolerate something, their endurance has reached its limit, and they begin to lose their temper. If someone keeps joking with you and you remain silent for a long time but finally say, “That’s enough!”, then your patience has run out.【2】

Why Is Patience Important?
Our ancestors viewed patience as the key to salvation. When we are patient, we can make better decisions and overcome difficulties more easily. In our culture, patience is so highly valued that proverbs say, “The patient dervish achieves his goal,” conveying that patience always leads to a positive outcome.
