Taşköprü Town History Museum

The Taşköprü Urban History Museum is a museum operating in a historically significant building located in the Taşköprü district of Kastamonu. The museum building was constructed in the second half of the 19th century for the Redif Taburu, the Ottoman Army’s part-time military organization. The structure, now used as a museum, serves as a center displaying various artifacts reflecting the historical and cultural heritage of the region.

The museum building was constructed in the 1850s for the Redif Battalions, established as auxiliary forces of the Ottoman Army. Although Sultan Mahmud II abolished the Janissary Corps in 1826 and founded the Asakir-i Mansure-i Muhammediye Army, the vast territories of the Ottoman Empire could not be adequately defended, leading to the creation of the Redif Units in 1834. The Redif Units were disbanded after 1912, and the building continued to be used for military purposes before being converted into a dispensary under the Ministry of Health. Transferred to the Taşköprü Municipality in 2007, the building was restored and opened as the Urban History Museum in 2017. It was visited by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on 29 August 1925.

The museum building is a single-story stone structure reflecting Ottoman military architecture. The entrance area displays various weapons, workshop tools and factory equipment. The structure features spacious rooms and was constructed using local stone and other traditional materials. Restoration work preserved the building’s historical fabric and transformed it into a functional museum environment.

After being used for various purposes over a long period, the building was transferred to the municipality in 2007. It then underwent comprehensive restoration and was opened to the public in 2017 as the Urban History Museum. The restoration efforts ensured the preservation of the building’s original architectural features while adapting it for museum functions.
