Şükrü Şankaya Anatolian High School

Şükrü Şankaya Anadolu Lisesi is a secondary education institution under the Ministry of National Education of Türkiye, operating in the Osmangazi district of Bursa. The institution aims to cultivate individuals grounded in scientific thought in accordance with Atatürk’s principles, proficient in foreign languages, and internalizing academic and ethical values.^【1】

The establishment process of the institution began with initiatives by parents of students who achieved high scores in the 1993 Anadolu Lisesi entrance examinations but could not be placed in existing schools in Bursa. With the commitment of businessman Şükrü Şankaya to fund the construction of the school building and the approval of then Minister of National Education Nihat Menteşe, the school was officially opened on 21 October 1993.

Educational activities commenced on 3 November 1993 in the building of Doğanevler Primary School with a student capacity of 72. Initially opened under the name “4. Murat Anadolu Lisesi,” the school’s name was changed to “2. Murat Anadolu Lisesi” on 2 November 1993. After land was allocated for a permanent building in the Yunuseli region, the school building’s foundation was laid on 26 October 1994. Completed within one year by Şükrü Şankaya, the building began operations on 30 October 1995. The official opening ceremony was held on 28 October 1996 with the participation of President Süleyman Demirel.^【2】

Şükrü Şankaya Anadolu Lisesi is a public school under the General Directorate of Secondary Education of the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of National Education. Administratively, it operates within the hierarchy of the Bursa Governorship and the Osmangazi District Governorship. The institution’s vision is defined as “Continuously Developing, Innovative, and Pioneering.”^【3】

Educational activities at the school are conducted on a full-day basis. Class hours run from 08:40 to 16:00. English is taught as the primary foreign language. The educational infrastructure utilizes fiber internet connectivity under the Fatih Project. The institution is among the schools authorized to implement the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme in accordance with international educational standards.^【4】

The school admits students based on results from the centralized examination system. The institution has a capacity of 26 classrooms, and the student quota is determined each academic year according to the number of graduating students.^【5】

The school campus is located in the Yunuseli neighborhood of the Osmangazi district in Bursa. The main building contains 28 classrooms. Dedicated laboratories for physics, chemistry, and biology support scientific research. Other physical facilities include one information technology classroom, a music classroom, an art classroom, a conference hall, and a multipurpose hall. The institution’s library holds a collection of 6,001 books. Additionally, the campus includes a 724 m² indoor sports hall, a cafeteria, and a medical unit.^【6】

Sports activities in basketball, volleyball, and futsal are conducted within the school, with the indoor sports hall actively utilized for this purpose. Table tennis facilities are also provided for students. Scientific activities are supported by laboratory-based experiments in physics, chemistry, and biology courses. Various intra-school and inter-school sports tournaments are organized.^【7】

Within the framework of digitalization and collaboration in education, eTwinning projects are implemented, and the institution holds the eSafety (Safe Internet) bronze certification. The “Sibling School Project” is applied to promote social solidarity. Academically, the internationally recognized IB Diploma Programme provides students with education aligned with global standards.^【8】
