The Stargate Project was announced on January 21 2025 by U.S. President Donald Trump during a press meeting held at White House. In the announcement, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son and Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison also participated.

The Stargate Project was developed in response to the growing global importance and strategic value of artificial intelligence technologies. Chair: Masayoshi Son, CEO of SoftBank, serves as chair of the Stargate Project. The project’s overall strategic direction and financial decisions are shaped under Son’s leadership.

Operational Execution: Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, manages the project’s operations. In this capacity, Altman is responsible for coordinating the development of AI infrastructure.

Technological Infrastructure: Oracle’s technical team oversees the design, construction and operation of data centers.

Total Investment: The total budget of the Stargate Project aims to reach $50 billion over four years. Initially, $10 billion has been made immediately available. The project operates on a phased funding model spanning a four-year time period. The initial investment focuses on data center construction, equipment procurement and technology development.

Data Centers: Initially, 20 large-scale data centers are planned for construction. Each facility is designed to be approximately 500,000 square meters in size.

Infrastructure Development: The project includes high-performance computing infrastructure for AI, power plants and network systems.

The data centers to be constructed under the Stargate Project are designed at a massive scale in both size and technological infrastructure. A total of 20 data centers, each approximately 500,000 square meters in size, will be built. Construction of the first data center has begun in Texas. Strategic locations across the United States are being evaluated for future centers. The data centers are engineered to meet the high energy demands of AI processing. To ensure continuous and efficient energy supply, renewable energy resources and dedicated power plants are planned. Advanced water and air cooling technologies will be employed to support high-density computing infrastructure.

The Stargate Project was announced following the revocation of former U.S. President Joe Biden’s executive order aimed at mitigating AI risks.
