Sheikh Adil Fountain

Şeyh Adil Çeşmesi is a historical water structure located in the city center of Kahramanmaraş, on Şeyh Adil Street within the Şeyh Adil Neighborhood, constructed between 1914 and 1916. Built by the Mutasarrıf of Maraş, İsmail Kemal Bey, the structure retains its original features to this day and is considered within the scope of cultural tourism.

Şeyh Adil Çeşmesi was constructed between 1914 and 1916 by İsmail Kemal Bey, the Mutasarrıf of Maraş. It is believed to have been one of the structures built in the past to meet the public water needs within the urban fabric of the region. Classified as a three-facade square fountain typical of the Ottoman period, the structure was integrated into the social life of its surroundings.

Architecturally, the structure is a three-facade square fountain constructed primarily of light yellowish finely cut stone. Its external dimensions measure approximately 3.10 × 3.350 × 6.45 meters. The southern facade features two round-arched niches. Current sources do not mention spouts or reservoirs; instead, the water outlets are equipped with individual taps.

Although Şeyh Adil Çeşmesi has a simple appearance, its arches and columns exhibit Baroque influences. The inscription plaque on the structure features a crescent and star motif at the beginning of each line.

Şeyh Adil Çeşmesi is situated in a central location within the Şeyh Adil Neighborhood, near the Şeyh Adil Cemetery. The fountain remains accessible to the public, and landscape improvements around it have created a designated space for visitors.

Today, the structure is recognized as part of the cultural heritage and is listed among accessible historical sites, continuing to exist as an integral component of the region’s historical fabric.
