Rengâhenk (Book)

Rengâhenk is a poetry collection by Can Yücel that explores social criticism, the quest for individual freedom, and human relationships. The book includes references to the political atmosphere of the era, as well as universal themes such as love, death, loneliness, and existential questioning. The collection consists of poems reflecting the poet’s critical and humorous perspective. Yücel employs slang and obscene language in his poems, viewing this linguistic choice as a tool of purification and a form of resistance against evil. Can Yücel’s poetry collection Rengâhenk was first published in 1982 and subsequently banned following the September 12 coup due to its obscene content.

Social Criticism and Everyday Life: The poems contain sharp critiques of social injustice, political events, and ordinary human conditions. The language used is plain and at times colloquial.

Hope and Resistance: Verses appear throughout the collection that express finding strength in adversity and searching for even a glimmer of hope amid seemingly hopeless situations (“I am the harbinger of earthquakes but hope will remain standing”).

Play with Language and Allusion: Through the imagery and descriptions in the poem titled “Rengâhenk,” the poet creates a linguistic richness. The structure of the poem transforms into a deliberate game of language.

Postmodern Traces: The collection features poetic structures that depart from neutral narration, instead constructed through irony and linguistic play.
