New World (Eye) Cave

New World Cave is one of the significant geological formations located within the boundaries of Karaman Province in Türkiye’s Central Anatolia Region. The cave is situated approximately 17 kilometers from the center of Karaman, near Dere Village. Its position atop the Göksu River Valley grants it notable geomorphological and ecological importance.

The cave exhibits a typical karstic character through its travertine formations, stalactites, and stalagmites. Its length approaches approximately one kilometer, with certain sections continuing as narrow passages and expansive galleries. Its interior features natural chambers formed by limestone dissolution, along with visual richness enhanced by humid air conditions and natural light effects.

Among the local population, New World Cave is sometimes referred to as “Eye Cave.” This name originates from the water sources at the cave’s entrance, which form a structure resembling an eye. These sources also fulfill the water needs of the surrounding natural ecosystem and influence the cave’s microclimate.

Since the cave has become the subject of scientific research, various steps have been taken under the coordination of the Karaman Governorship and the Provincial Directorate of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change to develop the cave for tourism. Environmental impact assessment processes have been initiated with the specific aim of preserving the natural structure and ensuring its sustainable use. Studies conducted in the area take into account not only the cave’s geological values but also the presence of biological species that contribute to its biodiversity.

New World Cave, alongside other natural and cultural sites in Karaman Province, is regarded as a key element supporting the region’s geotourism potential. Its aesthetic and scientific richness, derived from natural formation processes, makes the cave attractive to both domestic and international researchers and nature enthusiasts.
