Menteş Neighborhood

Menteş is a neighborhood subordinate to the district of Milas in Muğla Province, in Türkiye’s Aegean Region. Prior to the local administrative reforms of 2014, Menteş had the status of a village; since that date it has been classified as a neighborhood. It is located approximately 3 kilometers from the center of Milas and about 73 kilometers from the city center of Muğla.

Menteş Neighborhood is situated on gently undulating terrain overlooking the Milas plain. Its average elevation above sea level is 130 meters. The region exhibits characteristics of a Mediterranean climate, with hot dry summers and mild wet winters. The vegetation consists primarily of maquis, olive groves and small agricultural plots. Surrounding neighborhoods include the center of Milas, Selimiye and Kırcağız.

The name Menteş is generally accepted to derive from the Menteşe Beylik, which ruled the region during the 13th century. The Menteşe Beylik exerted long-standing influence over Muğla and its surroundings, giving its name to the region. Milas remained historically significant as one of the beylik’s capitals.

In antiquity, the area around Milas lay within the boundaries of the Carian civilization. Remains of ancient settlements such as Labranda, Euromos and Beçin are found in the region. Due to its proximity to these historical sites, Menteş Neighborhood is considered part of the area’s ancient settlement fabric.

The neighborhood’s population rose from approximately 730 in 2013 to around 1,150 in 2024. This growth is linked to its proximity to the center of Milas, the development of new residential areas and internal migration to the region. While retaining some traditional rural settlement characteristics, Menteş has in recent years undergone a transition toward an urban structure.

Menteş Neighborhood, which has experienced population growth and improved infrastructure in recent years, benefits significantly from its proximity to the district center and enhanced transportation access. As part of a renewal project undertaken by the Muğla Metropolitan Municipality, the 2,400-meter-long Milas–Menteş road has been modernized with hot asphalt paving and improved sidewalks, making access to the district center safer and more comfortable.

The Aegean village culture predominates in the neighborhood. Traditional stone buildings, courtyard houses and narrow streets define its architectural character. Despite its closeness to the center of Milas, Menteş retains its rural character. The local population primarily relies on agriculture and animal husbandry for livelihood. Main agricultural products include olives, wheat, barley and seasonal vegetables.
