Mehmet Özdoğan is an archaeologist and academic who has specialized in the archaeology of Neolithic, period and Anatolia through on. As one of Türkiye’s leading archaeologists, Özdoğan has made significant contributions to the science of archaeology through his excavation work and academic research. He has earned a distinguished reputation in the scholarly world particularly for his research on the Neolithic period. His decades-long projects and excavations have shed light on the prehistoric history of Anatolia.
Professor Dr. Mehmet Özdoğan was born in Istanbul in 1943 and completed his secondary education at the English High School for Boys and Robert College. In 1963 he enrolled as a student in the Prehistory Department of Istanbul University. During his academic training, he studied under Professor Dr. Halet Çambel, Professor Dr. Hans Bittel, and Professor Dr. Robert J. Braidwood, all internationally renowned scholars in their fields, and also obtained certificates in Prehistory, Near Eastern Cultures, and Physical Anthropology. Özdoğan spent his entire academic career at Istanbul University, assuming the chairmanship of the Prehistory Discipline in 2000 and retiring in 2010.
Mehmet Özdoğan began his academic career at an early age and quickly became a recognized figure in the world of archaeology. The excavation projects he conducted across various regions of Türkiye provided him with vital opportunities to preserve and study the country’s archaeological heritage. Mehmet Özdoğan has received numerous awards and published significant works for his contributions to archaeology. In 2001 he was awarded the Service Prize by the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA). In 2008 he received the Vehbi Ram Prize. In 2022 he was honored with the Çukurova Prize by the Çukurova Initiative. In the same year, he received the Mergen (Wisdom) Prize at the II International Mythology Film Festival.

Despite his demanding academic career, Mehmet Özdoğan has diverse personal interests. He enjoys hiking and visiting historical sites, and is also engaged in photography. While little is publicly known about his family and private life, he has built strong relationships with students and colleagues in the academic community and has played a key role in mentoring many young archaeologists.
