Marmara 1 Street

Marmara 1 Street is located in the Soğanlı Mahallesi neighborhood of Istanbul’s Bahçelievler district. In the early 1970s, Marmara 1 Street was characterized by a high concentration of informal settlements. However, in 1976, the Çoban Apartmanı, constructed by Mehmet Çoban along with his father Mustafa Çoban, brother Adil Çoban, and brother Kadir Çoban, marked one of the first steps toward a new era in the street’s development. The Çoban family moved into this building in 1977. This development initiated the transformation of informal settlements into family apartment buildings in the area.

Over time, alongside the Çoban Apartmanı, other family apartment buildings such as the Ateş Apartmanı, Kılıç Apartmanı, and Arslan Apartmanı were constructed. These buildings still exist today. Urban development in the region accelerated after 2010 due to urban transformation projects. As of 2025, seven of the 21 apartment buildings facing Marmara 1 Street have been renewed under urban transformation initiatives.

The exact location of the street on maps can be easily identified, and its GPS coordinates are expressed as 41° 0' 43.5600" N and 28° 51' 25.9020" E. Of the 21 apartment buildings facing Marmara 1 Street, 18 are numbered directly from this street. The remaining three apartments receive their numbers via the adjacent komşu Yalaz Street.

Marmara 1 Street in Soğanlı Mahallesi and Marmara Street in the nearby Siyavuşpaşa Mahallesi caused confusion due to their similar names. To resolve this issue, the municipality decided before 2014 to rename the street Marmara 1.
