Kahraman Sağra Hazelnut Museum

Kahraman Sağra Hazelnut Museum is located in the Altınordu district of Ordu province in Türkiye’s Black Sea Region. The museum narrates the entire production process of hazelnuts, from cultivation and harvesting to processing and marketing, within their historical and cultural context. It holds the distinction of being the first museum in Türkiye dedicated to hazelnuts.

The museum derives its name from Kahraman Sağra, a prominent figure in hazelnut production and industry in Ordu. The Sağra family gained recognition particularly from the 1930s onward for their activities in hazelnut processing and packaging, contributing significantly to the industrial development of the city. As part of this legacy, it was decided to convert the family’s mansion into a museum under Kahraman Sağra’s name.

The museum is housed within the Kahraman Sağra Mansion, believed to have been constructed in the late 19th century and representing an example of Ordu’s traditional residential architecture. This three-story mansion is situated in the Selimiye Neighborhood of Altınordu district in Ordu. Its restoration was carried out in 2018 by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the building was assigned to the Ordu Metropolitan Municipality in 2020.

The museum presents all stages of hazelnut production thematically. Visitors are introduced to the following production steps through visual and material-based exhibits.

The museum’s collection includes traditional tools and equipment used in hazelnut farming, informational panels illustrating the production process, photographs, and visual narratives. Additionally, the impact of hazelnuts on Ordu’s urban culture, social life, and economy is presented through information boards and archival documents.

While documenting the historical development and production process of hazelnuts, the museum also aims to archive the social, economic, and cultural impacts of this process. Its establishment in Ordu, a province closely associated with hazelnut farming, enables the museum to convey the regional history of agriculture and industry. Furthermore, the comparative presentation of historical farming methods alongside contemporary practices supports the museum’s educational function.
