Kabaoğlu Ancient Aqueduct

Kabaoğlu Ancient Aqueduct is a Roman-era water conveyance structure located in the Üçtepeler area within the boundaries of İzmit district, Kocaeli Province, Türkiye. The structure is approximately 50 meters long and 15 meters high, featuring a two-tiered arch system.

Nicomedia (İzmit) was a major city during the Roman Empire, particularly attaining the status of capital during the reign of Diocletian. The city’s growing population and its imperial significance necessitated an extensive water infrastructure. In this context, the Kabaoğlu Aqueduct is regarded as an integral component of Nicomedia’s evolving urban organization.

The lower section of the structure is constructed with stone blocks, while the upper section employs brick and mortar. Traces of repairs from later periods are visible on the upper arches.

The Kabaoğlu Aqueduct played a vital role in transporting water from springs in the Üçtepeler area to the ancient settlement of Nicomedia. The structure served not only urban domestic needs but also supplied water to public buildings and likely military units.

The southern section of the structure suffered significant damage during the 17 August 1999 Marmara Earthquake, and further deterioration and partial collapses have occurred due to environmental conditions. Today, despite damage to various parts, the structure remains standing.
