İzmir Neşe and Cartoon Museum

The Museum of Humor and Cartoon is a cultural institution with specialized expertise, focusing not only on cartoon art but also on humorous literature, comic film posters, and elements that bring joy to life. Housed in a historic mansion in the Alsancak neighborhood of Konak district, İzmir, the building was restored by the Konak Municipality and opened to the public as a museum in 2012. The museum exhibits both boutique museum characteristics and those of a living museum, particularly through its role in documenting and preserving the humorous heritage of the Aegean and Mediterranean regions.

The Museum of Humor and Cartoon was created through the restoration of a historic building constructed in 1879 and introduced to İzmir’s cultural life by the Konak Municipality. It was officially opened in 2012, with the inaugural event featuring the “Mediterranean Humor Cartoon Exhibition.” The museum was established to preserve, display and transmit the humorous heritage of İzmir and Türkiye to future generations.

Career in cartoon museology in Türkiye began in 1975 with the opening of the Cartoon and Humor Museum in Istanbul’s Tepebaşı district. Subsequently, the Atila Özer Cartoon House and the Education Cartoon Museum affiliated with Anadolu University were established. The Museum of Humor and Cartoon represents İzmir within this tradition. It emphasizes that humor is not only critical but also peaceful and enriching to life.

The museum’s collection includes works by leading figures in Turkish cartoon art such as Eflatun Nuri Erkoç, Güngör Kabakçıoğlu, and Niyazi Yoltaş. The collection comprises numerous artworks, documents and publications that reflect the development of cartoon art.

In addition to important publications such as Türkiye’s first humor magazine Diyojen (1870) and Marko Paşa, the museum also houses humorous works by Abidin Dino, a painter and cartoonist of the Republican era. Furthermore, the museum provides researchers with materials related to Turkish and international cartoon art, including books, albums, catalogs, brochures, magazines, records and ephemera. In this regard, the museum functions not only as an exhibition space but also as a center accessible to visual and written resources.

The Museum of Humor and Cartoon maintains its identity as a living museum through a variety of exhibitions, workshops and events held throughout the year. National and international cartoon exhibitions, thematic film screenings, lectures and workshop sessions are regularly organized. Educational programs are designed for all age groups, supporting the museum’s function through a lifelong learning approach.

The museum also hosts international projects, including the award-winning International İzmir-themed Cartoon Competition, the Humorous Object Competition, and the International Portrait Festival. As part of these events, both Turkish and foreign cartoonists have conducted portrait drawing activities in İzmir.

The museum is located in the Alsancak neighborhood, near Kıbrıs Şehitleri Caddesi. Its central position ensures easy access for visitors. The museum also features a shop selling souvenirs adorned with drawings from the world of cartoon art.
