Eynesil Castle

Eynesil Castle is located within the boundaries of Eynesil District in Giresun Province, in the Boztepe Neighborhood. It lies approximately 2 kilometers east of the district center. This coastal fortress is built on a rocky promontory along the Black Sea coast. Constructed using the dry-stone masonry technique with stone materials, the structure is situated at a low elevation near sea level.

The castle was built using the dry-stone masonry technique with stone materials. Its north-south oriented walls conform to the natural contours of the rocky terrain on which it is constructed. A central east-west wall divides the castle into two sections. At the center of this wall is an opening approximately two meters wide, providing access to the section facing the sea.

There is no definitive information regarding the exact date of construction or the identity of the builder of Eynesil Castle. However, it has been suggested that the structure may date to the Roman period. Detailed scholarly research on its history remains limited.

The castle contains a single cistern. Some sources also mention the presence of a church within the castle grounds. This church was located east of the central open area, facing the cliffs. However, no physical remains of this church are visible today.

Eynesil Castle was placed under protection by the Trabzon Board for the Conservation of Cultural and Natural Heritage, Decision No. 2124 dated 23 December 1994. In 2001, restoration works were carried out that included authentic repairs to the structure. These efforts partially restored the castle’s architectural integrity.

The castle is situated along the Giresun-Trabzon Highway and is accessible by road. It is approximately 81 kilometers from the center of Giresun Province and can be reached quickly from Eynesil District center via the highway.
