Erdemli (District)

Erdemli is a district of Mersin Province in Türkiye’s Mediterranean Region. It is bordered by Mezitli to the east, Silifke to the west, Karaman and Mut districts to the north, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. The district covers an area of 2,478 km² and has an average elevation of 5 meters. As of 2022, Erdemli’s total population was 146,673. It includes 71 neighborhoods. The district experiences a Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers and mild wet winters.

Surface surveys and archaeological finds in Erdemli and its surroundings indicate that settlement in the region dates back to the Chalcolithic Age. Within the district boundaries lie ancient sites such as Elaiussa Sebaste, Akkale, Kanlıdivane, Çatıören, Lamos and Imbriogon. Remains from the Roman and Byzantine periods have been found in these areas. The name Erdemli derives from a Turkmen tribe that settled in the region during the 19th century and called themselves “Erdemoğulları.” Erdemli became a district in 1954 when it was separated from Silifke.

Erdemli’s economy is largely based on agriculture. Protected cultivation of vegetables and fruits is practiced in the district. Citrus fruits, tomatoes, cucumbers and bananas are widely grown. Olive and walnut production are also significant. Beekeeping, animal husbandry and fishing are additional economic activities in the district.

Within Erdemli’s boundaries are historical sites including Elaiussa Sebaste, Kanlıdivane, Lamos, Çatıören, Imbriogon and Akkale. Along with the Kızkalesi coastline, these sites are visited for both cultural and coastal tourism. Additionally, Zeyne, Sorgun, Güzeloluk and the Taurus highlands lie within the district limits.

Erdemli is located 35 kilometers from the city center of Mersin. Access to the district is provided by road. Various public institutions, healthcare facilities and educational centers are present in Erdemli. The Erdemli Applied Technology and Business College, affiliated with Mersin University, is located within the district boundaries.
