Eğrigöl (Antalya)

Eğrigöl is a karstic lake and wetland located at the foothills of the Geyik Dağları, among the highest peaks of the Toroslar, which separate the South and Central Anatolia regions of Türkiye. The area lies on the Taşeli Plateau and administratively falls within the boundaries of Gündoğmuş district of Antalya Province (Karabükü Village), while geographically it borders the province of Konya.^【1】 The lake is situated 22.5 kilometres as the crow flies from the Gündoğmuş district centre and 28.3 kilometres from Bozkır district of Konya. Its coordinates are recorded as 32°12'18.45" East and 36°55'54.22" North.^【2】 The elevation of the lake and its surroundings is reported by various measurement points and sources as 2070 metres, 2100 metres, and approximately 2350 metres. Due to its geographical and ecological characteristics, the region is also referred to in literature as “The Alps of Antalya.”^【3】

The lake is surrounded by mountains, with streams formed by melting snow winding into the lake. Located 2.5 kilometres to the west is Karın Gölü, and 1.7 kilometres to the southwest is Karıncalı Gölü. Due to the high elevation and topographic features of the region, snow depth has been measured at up to 2 to 3 metres in places even during May. The area, classified as a terrestrial wetland, was officially registered as a “Locally Significant Wetland” by the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks on 6 December 2021. The registered area covers 86.32 hectares.^【4】

Eğrigöl and its surroundings host rich biological diversity, including numerous endemic species.

Flora (Vegetation): The wetland surroundings consist of shrublands, aquatic ecosystems along stream beds, and rocky areas. Along the lake shore, aquatic vegetation includes white water lily (Nymphaea alba) and common reed (Phragmites australis). Other endemic and herbaceous plant species in the region include crocus, yellow crocus, blue crocus, jasmine, narcissus, double tulip, weeping bride, and mourning tulip.^【5】

Fauna (Animal Life): Twelve bird species have been identified in the area, three of which are directly dependent on the wetland. These include the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), Eurasian coot (Fulica atra), and black stork (Ciconia nigra). The region also serves as a stopover for migratory birds. Among mammals, wild rabbit and Anatolian squirrel have been observed, while frog and fish populations also maintain their life cycles in the area.^【6】

No official facilities exist within the boundaries of the Locally Significant Wetland of Eğrigöl, and the area retains its pristine condition. During spring and summer, the region is used for nature-based activities such as photography, hiking, running, camping, and picnicking. Additionally, due to its snow cover, skiing is possible during spring months. However, the rocky terrain is unsuitable for rock climbing. Experts have issued warnings urging visitors not to light fires, discard waste, or uproot vegetation in order to preserve the natural balance and endemic species. Authorities have also emphasized the importance of complying with warning signs placed in the area to prevent potential accidents.^【7】
