Diyarbakır Anatolian High School

Diyarbakır Anadolu Lisesi is a secondary education institution under the direct authority of the Ministry of National Education, operating in the Yenişehir district of Diyarbakır. As of March 2014, the institution has been granted the status of a "project school" and continues its educational activities within this framework. The school adheres to an educational philosophy that aims to support students’ academic success alongside their scientific, artistic, and cultural development according to universal standards.^【1】

Diyarbakır Anadolu Lisesi is one of the paid boarding male colleges established in six provinces of Türkiye under a law adopted by the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye in 1955 for the purpose of providing education in a foreign language. The school, whose opening was decided upon a proposal from the General Directorate of Secondary Education, began its educational activities on 29 October 1956 under the name Diyarbakır National Education College. The first building where the institution operated was the historic structure built in 1308 Rumi (1891 CE) during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II as a "Rüştiye and İdadi" building and currently used by the Directorate of National Education. In 1964, day students, including girls, were admitted for the first time. In 1969, the institution, renamed Maarif College, moved to its current building in the Şehitlik neighborhood, previously used as an education institute.

The institution’s name was changed to Diyarbakır Anadolu Lisesi in 1974. Until the 1998–1999 academic year, its educational structure consisted of one year of preparatory education, three years of middle school, and three years of high school, totaling seven years. With the implementation of the Basic Education Law, the middle school section was gradually phased out, and the school transitioned to a four-year high school structure with one year of preparatory education. Starting in the 2005–2006 academic year, the preparatory class was abolished, and the duration of education was set directly at four years.^【2】

Diyarbakır Anadolu Lisesi is among the "project schools" directly managed and supervised by the central administration of the Ministry of National Education. In accordance with its project school status, administrators and teachers serving at the institution are appointed through a special procedure by the Ministry. The institutional identity of the school is built upon a structure that synthesizes traditional values with universal human values.^【3】

The duration of education at the school is four years, following the curriculum established for Anadolu High Schools. Starting in the 11th grade, students may select subjects and fields of study according to their interests and abilities. The language of instruction is Turkish; English is taught as the first foreign language and German as the second foreign language. The educational philosophy is based on research, inquiry, and learning by doing, moving away from rote memorization. A student-centered approach is adopted, in which teachers assume facilitative and motivational roles in the learning process.^【4】

Admission to Diyarbakır Anadolu Lisesi is conducted annually through centralized entrance examinations organized by the Ministry of National Education, with placements determined by students’ achievement scores. Since the 1958–1959 academic year, students who pass the examination and enroll are also granted the right to be "State-Funded Boarding Students." While the school originally admitted only male students, beginning in the 1964–1965 academic year, it began admitting both girls and boys through the entrance examination.^【5】

The institution operates on a campus located in the Köşkler neighborhood of Yenişehir district, Diyarbakır, on Şehitlik Street. In addition to the main educational building, the campus includes 14 residential units. Heating for the school building is provided by a central heating system. Physical standards are based on compliance with established criteria regarding lighting, acoustics, safety, ventilation, and cleanliness.^【6】

The administrative staff and teaching faculty are selected by the Ministry upon approval, from among experts and dedicated professionals. Personnel management is conducted in accordance with the principles of transparency, mutual interaction, and high motivation. Professional development and motivation of teachers are regarded as fundamental elements for enhancing educational quality within the institutional structure.^【7】

Diyarbakır Anadolu Lisesi aims to cultivate individuals who are not only academically successful but also committed to the principles and reforms of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and sensitive to national and global issues. The school strives to develop students who are self-confident, responsible, equipped with a scientific mindset, respectful of the environment, and possessing a high level of aesthetic appreciation. Furthermore, it prioritizes graduating students as individuals equipped with 21st-century skills, strong problem-solving abilities, and a deep sense of social service.^【8】

Within the framework of educational programs tailored to students’ developmental levels and interests, the institution places significant emphasis on artistic and cultural activities. Various sports activities are organized within the school to support students’ physical development. The necessary environments are provided to enable students to develop an aesthetic understanding and actively participate in artistic endeavors.

Diyarbakır Anadolu Lisesi implements various projects within the framework of bilateral or multilateral agreements at national and international levels. Within this scope, eTwinning and TÜBİTAK projects are actively carried out at the school. The institution fosters a research culture that encourages students to reflect on national and global challenges and to generate solutions.^【9】
