Bursa Anatolian High School

Bursa Anadolu Lisesi is a secondary education institution operating under the Ministry of National Education of Türkiye, located in the Dikkaldırım neighborhood of the Osmangazi district in Bursa. Its vision is to be an institution that sets a model through original work in the light of science and technology and places its graduates in the world’s top universities; its mission is to cultivate free-thinking and knowledge-producing individuals in accordance with the principles and reforms of Atatürk.^【1】

Bursa Anadolu Lisesi was established in 1970 under the name "Bursa Maarif Koleji" and is the first Anadolu High School opened in Bursa. Due to the absence of its own building during the founding phase, female students received their education at Bursa Kız Lisesi and male students at Bursa Erkek Lisesi between 1971 and 1974. In the 1974–1975 academic year, educational activities were consolidated at Mithat Paşa Primary School; the institution moved to its current building in the 1976–1977 academic year. The duration of education at the school was seven years including a preparatory class until 1998–1999, after which it was changed to four years following middle school starting in the 2005–2006 academic year.^【2】

The institution holds the status of a public school under the Ministry of National Education of Türkiye. Its management philosophy is built upon the adoption of national and universal values. The school operates under a single-shift system, with class hours running from 09:00 to 16:00. Foreign language instruction includes English, German, and French. Student admissions have been conducted since 1974 through the Central Examination System implemented by the Ministry of National Education (LGS and its derivatives). The school’s minimum admission scores have increased over the years; for the 2023–2024 academic year, students were admitted with scores ranging from 480.81 to 488.70. Boarding facilities are provided for students coming from outside the province and district.^【5】

The campus includes 25 classrooms, 3 workshops, 1 multipurpose hall, and 2 sports halls. There is one physics laboratory and one chemistry laboratory dedicated to science education. Cultural and social facilities include one music classroom, one art classroom, and one game room. The library holds 3,355 registered books; additionally, the campus hosts two cafeterias and three medical units. The school building is heated by a natural gas radiator system.^【6】

According to data from the 2020–2021 academic year, the institution employs 62 teachers, 6 administrators, and 3 clerical staff. Support staff include one chef, one assistant chef, five service personnel (one of whom is permanent), and three security officers working in three shifts on a 24-hour basis. The total staff count for the relevant period is 81.^【7】

The student population has ranged between 649 and 1,015 across different enrollment periods. As of the 2020–2021 academic year, the school has a total of 32 classes distributed as follows: seven classes in grade nine, nine in grade ten, nine in grade eleven, and seven in grade twelve. Students are characterized by their achievements in local, national, and international examinations.^【8】

In sports, the school has achieved success including the Bursa Championship in chess, the Turkey Championship in Argentine Tango dance, and the Bursa Championship in archery (compound bow). It has also secured various rankings in basketball, volleyball, skiing, and swimming. In cultural fields, the school has received the "Best Orchestra" award at the Nilüfer Municipality High School Orchestra Competition, first place in a poetry contest at the district level, and honorable mentions in drawing competitions.^【9】

The institution implements TUBITAK 4006 projects and organizes international study trips. Its academic history includes international achievements such as third place in the 34th and 35th International Mathematical Olympiads. Additionally, the school participates in certification programs in areas such as school health and safe internet use (eSafety).^【10】
