Turkish politician, journalist, writer, and lawyer Bahadır Dülger served three terms as a member of parliament during the Democrat Party era and was sentenced to heavy imprisonment after being tried following the 27 May 1960 coup due to his membership in the Parliamentary Investigation Commission. Dülger was also known for his journalistic and translation activities, having written articles for various newspapers and magazines and translated numerous works into Turkish.
Mehmet Kudret Bahadır Dülger was born in Üsküdar, Istanbul in 1911. His father was Bahriye Yüzbaşı Ragıp Efendi and his mother was Pakize Hanım. He began his primary education in Zonguldak and graduated from Galatasaray High School in 1937 from the Faculty of Law at Ankara University. During his university years he worked in various institutions as a civil servant and translator. After graduation he served as a teacher in Erzurum and as director of publications at the newspaper Doğu. Between 1939 and 1941 while fulfilling his military service he also taught history at high schools in Erzurum and Sivas. Subsequently he held positions such as rapporteur at the Ministry of National Education journalist and administrator.
Dülger entered the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye as a deputy from Erzurum representing the Democrat Party in the elections of 14 May 1950. During the Ninth Term he held various roles in the Petitions and Foreign Affairs Committees. He was re-elected as a deputy from Erzurum in the 1954 elections and from Gaziantep in the 1957 elections. During this period he submitted numerous bills and regulations proposals questions and motions. He spoke 134 times in the General Assembly of the TBMM demonstrating an active legislative profile.
In 1958 Dülger served on the “Measures Commission” within the DP parliamentary group. In 1960 he was elected to the TBMM Investigation Commission composed exclusively of DP deputies and served as chairman of the Press Subcommission. After the 27 May 1960 coup he was arrested and tried before the High Court of Justice on charges of violating the constitution. On 15 September 1961 he was sentenced to death; the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. Due to health problems his sentence was fully pardoned in 1964.
After the Yassıada proceedings Dülger continued his literary work. He died in London on 21 March 1968 while receiving medical treatment. His funeral was held at the family cemetery in Emirgan Istanbul.
In addition to his journalistic career Dülger published numerous translations books and articles. In addition to his book Erzurum Yolunda (1940) he wrote on national will Islamic society and mosques for the magazine Sebilürreşad. He translated classical works such as Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina Zola’s The Dreyfus Affair and Roper’s The Last Days of Hitler into Turkish.
