In 1953, she joined the health team accompanying a Red Crescent Hajj caravan to Saudi Arabia. As the only female doctor in the eight-member team, she provided medical services during the Hajj pilgrimage. In 1959, she obtained a residence permit in Saudi Arabia.


Ökten provided healthcare services for many years during Hajj and Umrah seasons. She focused on the health needs of female pilgrims and offered medical support to patients from various countries. Throughout her professional life, she divided her time between Istanbul and Medina.

Personal Life

Ökten never married. She spent the greater part of her life dedicated to her profession and the healthcare services she provided in Medina. In various speeches, she acknowledged the influence of her family’s legacy in education and religious service.

Death

Dr. Ayşe Hümeyra Ökten passed away on 16 June 2020 in Medina at the age of 95. In accordance with her will and out of respect for her services, she was buried in the sacred Jannat al-Baqi cemetery in Medina.
