Assassin's Creed Mirage is an action-adventure video game released by Ubisoft on October 5, 2023. Set during the Golden Age of 9th-century Baghdad, the game follows the story of its protagonist, Basim Ibn Ishaq, as he evolves from a street thief into a Master Assassin. The development team returned to the series’ roots by focusing on stealth, parkour and a more linear narrative, moving away from the expansive role-playing mechanics introduced in recent entries. Players follow Basim’s growth within the ranks of the Hidden Ones.

The game is set in Baghdad, the center of the Abbasid Caliphate in the 9th century. The story recounts how Basim, a young street thief, joins the Hidden Ones and becomes a Master Assassin while seeking answers to the nightmares that haunt him. The narrative adopts a more linear structure centered on Basim’s personal development and includes iconic locations such as Alamut Castle, central to the series’ early titles. The game world presents a dense and interactive depiction of Baghdad divided into four main districts: the industrial quarter of Kerh, the gardens of the Round City, and two others. As players explore the city, they witness historical events such as the Zanj Rebellion and encounter figures from the era, including the renowned scholar Al-Khwarizmi.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage shifts away from the role-playing elements introduced in the Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla trilogy, returning to the core mechanics of the franchise. Gameplay is heavily focused on stealth and parkour. Players use a variety of tools such as smoke bombs, throwable blades, and blow darts to neutralize enemies undetected. There is no level-up system; progression is instead achieved through skill points earned by completing missions, which unlock a simplified skill tree divided into three branches: Phantom, Trickster, and Predator. Weapons and gear are upgraded using materials gathered from blacksmiths and tailors throughout the city. The game’s map is significantly more compact than those of previous entries, with the main story estimated to take approximately 20 to 30 hours to complete.
