Ajay Banga, a businessman and development expert of Indian origin, assumed office on 2 June 2023 as the 14th President of the World Bank Group. He is the first person of Indian origin to be appointed President in the World Bank’s more than 80-year institutional history.【1】
Born in 1959 in Pune, India, Ajay Banga shaped his education at prominent institutions in India. He completed his undergraduate studies in Economics at St. Stephen’s College, affiliated with the University of Delhi, and later earned an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM Ahmedabad).
Banga’s career began in the early 1980s as a management trainee at Nestlé. During his 13 years at Nestlé, he gained experience in sales, marketing and general management, playing an active role in expanding the company’s operations in the Indian market. He then joined PepsiCo, where he served for two years, achieving success in managing the launch and strategic positioning of Western fast-food chains in India during its economic liberalization.
In 1996, Banga joined Citigroup, advancing his career in finance. He held senior management positions across a broad geographic footprint including the United States, Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He also oversaw the company’s microfinance initiatives, gaining familiarity with social finance models. In 2010, Banga became President and CEO of Mastercard, leading the company for 12 years and transforming it technologically. While managing a global workforce of approximately 24,000, he established the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth.【2】
Nominated by Joe Biden, Banga was elected President of the World Bank Group in June 2023 for a five-year term. Under Banga’s leadership, the Bank has launched reforms aimed at accelerating operational processes, expanding credit capacity and integrating the private sector into development efforts. Key initiatives include providing electricity to 300 million Africans by 2030 and expanding access to health services for 1.5 billion people.【3】

At the center of Banga’s development philosophy is job creation. He believes that work provides not only income but also social dignity and a sense of personal purpose. Guided by this approach, key goals include ensuring electricity access for 300 million Africans by 2030, expanding access to affordable and quality health services for 1.5 billion people, and promoting modern agricultural business models.【4】
Ajay Banga argues that achieving large-scale development goals cannot be accomplished by public resources alone. Therefore, he has made integrating the private sector’s innovation, financing and implementation capacity a top priority. To this end, he established the Private Sector Investment Lab, bringing together CEOs, investment funds and development partners to remove structural barriers facing private capital in emerging markets.

From 2020 to 2022, Ajay Banga served as President of the International Chamber of Commerce and held board positions at organizations such as the American Red Cross, Kraft Foods and Dow Inc. As a founding partner of the Cyber Preparedness Institute, he has also taken on a role in digital security. Additionally, he has advised U.S. administrations during various periods and co-chaired the Partnership for Central America, focusing on addressing the root causes of migration through economic opportunity. Most recently, he has served on the founding executive council of the Peace Council for Gaza’s stability and reconstruction, coordinating international cooperation for regional peace and economic development.
Ajay Banga has received numerous national and international awards. In 2012, he was awarded the Foreign Policy Association Medal; in 2016, the Padma Shri Award from the President of India; and in 2019, the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. He has also been honored with the Council on Foreign Relations Global Leadership Award and the Singapore Public Service Star Distinguished Friend Award in 2021.【6】
