Ahmet Bey (Lakşe), born in 1883 in Mostar, was an active politician during the final years of the Ottoman Empire and the early years of the Republic of Türkiye, and one of the members of the 1st Term of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye. Ahmet Bey, a member of the Lakşe family that migrated from Mostar to İnegöl, engaged in numerous fields including agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry, and politics. His participation in the TBMM was brief; he is considered to have resigned from his parliamentary seat in 1921. He passed away in İnegöl in 1935.
Ahmet Lakşe was born into the Lakišić family, whose roots trace back to Konya in Bosnia’s Mostar. His father, Mehmet Bey, belonged to the Bosnian aristocracy, and his mother was Gülsüm Hanım. In 1895, following the occupation of Bosnia-Herzegovina by the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the subsequent wave of migration, he relocated with his family to İnegöl.
After completing his rüştiye education, he devoted himself to agriculture and animal husbandry on his farms in Yenişehir and İnegöl, becoming one of the first breeders of Merino sheep in Türkiye. He was also active in racehorse breeding and forestry.
In 1929, together with his brother Şakir Bey, he founded the “Uludağ and Karabel Forests İnegöl Timber Company.” He also served as president of the İnegöl Halkevi and was a member of the Forestry Commission of the First Village and Agricultural Development Congress. Ahmet Bey’s family, as heirs to the Lakišić Foundation in Mostar, contributed to the cultural and waqf history of the region.
Ahmet Lakşe joined the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye in its 1st Term under registration number 147 as the Deputy of Ertuğrul. He attended the Assembly on 23 April 1920, and his credentials were approved on 24 April. On 27 April, he was elected to the Commission for Economic Affairs and presented an important proposal to the Assembly’s agenda in May of the same year.
On 13 May 1920, he proposed that banditry be classified under the Law on Treason as part of the campaign against lawlessness. However, this proposal was rejected by the Judicial Council on the grounds that it was not legally appropriate.
Ahmet Lakşe traveled to İnegöl on a one-month leave on 24 May 1920 but did not return to Ankara. He was reported to be occupied with organizational duties, with approval from the Governor of Bursa, Hacim Muhittin Bey, and was thus temporarily granted leave by the Assembly. However, due to his failure to return to the Assembly for seven months, he was officially considered to have resigned from his parliamentary seat on 19 January 1921.
Some sources suggest that Ahmet Lakşe’s resignation was due to a recurring illness he suffered during the Balkan Wars, which led him to seek treatment in Vienna; however, no official documentation supports this claim.
Ahmet Lakşe spent the final years of his life in England, receiving medical treatment in Europe due to health issues. He passed away in İnegöl on 19 October 1935 and was buried in the Kavaklaraltı Cemetery. It is known that the properties belonging to the Lakišić Foundation in Mostar, associated with his family, still exist today. His memory has been preserved in İnegöl through the naming of a street after him.
