Abdüllâtif Naci Eldeniz was a staff officer and member of parliament who served in military and political roles from the late Ottoman Empire through the Republican period. A graduate of the Military School, Eldeniz was particularly known for his roles as an instructor and inspector; he held command positions at various levels during three major conflicts: the Balkan Wars, the First World War, and the Turkish War of Independence. During the Republican era, he served as a member of parliament and was recognized for his contributions to military education and his translated works. Eldeniz died in 1948 and his remains were transferred to the State Cemetery.
Abdüllâtif Naci Eldeniz was born in 1875 in Manastır. His father was Halil Bey and his mother was Fatma Canan Hanım. He completed his primary education in Manastır and then attended military secondary and preparatory schools. He entered the Military School in 1890 and graduated in 1893 with the rank of second lieutenant. After graduation, he was sent to Germany where he completed a training internship in Koblenz and improved his German language skills. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1895 and to captain in 1897.
Eldeniz served for many years as an instructor at the Military School, holding positions such as assistant to the director of training and deputy director of instruction. He taught military medicine and among his students was Mustafa Kemal Paşa. In 1902 he was promoted to major and in 1907 to lieutenant colonel. Although his rank was temporarily lowered in 1909 under the Tasfiye-i Rüteb Law, he was subsequently reinstated. During this period he held important posts including director of the Gendarmerie School, commander of the Reserve Officers School, and regimental commander of the Military School.
During the Balkan Wars, Eldeniz served in the General Staff headquarters. In the Second Balkan War, he acted as aide-de-camp to Müşir İzzet Paşa, the Deputy Commander-in-Chief. During the First World War, he served as head of the Third Army Teaching Council and as inspector of depot units. In 1918 he served as a military advisor and interpreter during Sultan Vahdettin’s visit to Germany. In the same year he was appointed as the Sultan’s personal aide and military instructor to the princes.
After the Armistice of Mudros, Eldeniz acted as an intermediary in meetings between the Sultan and officials in Istanbul. In 1921 he moved to Anatolia and joined the National Struggle. He commanded the 7th Division and participated in the Great Offensive. Following the Commander-in-Chief’s Battle, he was promoted in 1922 to the rank of mirliva (major general). After the establishment of the Republic, he served as inspector of military schools and commander of the 5th Corps. He played an active role in suppressing the Sheikh Said Rebellion.
In 1927 Eldeniz was promoted to lieutenant general and served as a member of the General Officers Military Court. In 1928 he retired by his own request. In the same year he was elected as a member of parliament for Cebelibereket. After the abolition of the Cebelibereket constituency, he served as a member of parliament for Seyhan from 1935 to 1943. In the Grand National Assembly he held positions on the Foreign Affairs Committee, the National Defense Committee, and the Committee for the Examination of Assembly Accounts.
Eldeniz published numerous books and translations in the field of military education. These include Tabsıra (1899), Manganın Usûl-i Talimi (1920), Asya-yı Şarki Sefer-i Ahirinde Japonların Suret-i Taarruzları (1906), Sunuf-ı Muhtelifenin Müttehiden Sevk ve İdâre ve Muharebesi (1922), Bir Askerin Düşünümleri (1929), and Büyük İskender-Dara (1933). His most famous literary work is the poem titled “Rumeli Mersiyesi.”
Eldeniz received various medals and orders from the Ottoman Empire and European states: the Second Class Order of Mejidie, the Silver Medal of Distinction, the Austro-Hungarian Order of Merit, the Prussian Eagle and Crown Order, the Prince Danilo Order of Montenegro, the government orders of Serbia and Romania, and the Independence Medal with red-green ribbon awarded by the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye.
Eldeniz died in 1948 and was buried in the Ankara Cebeci Cemetery. In 1988 his remains were transferred to the State Cemetery. He was married to Makbule Hanım, daughter of Grand Vizier Kamil Paşa, and had one daughter named Perihan. Fluent in German and French, Eldeniz holds a prominent place among the key figures of the Republic in military, political, and cultural terms.
