Takyeciler Camii
Takyeciler Camii is a very old place of worship from the Ottoman period, located in the city center of Tokat. This mosque was not merely a place where people performed their prayers; it also served as a center that supported its surroundings and brought people together.
History
Although the exact date of its construction is unknown, Ottoman-era endowment records indicate that the mosque existed as early as the 15th century. The word “takyé” refers to small places of worship where dervishes resided. Therefore, the name “Takyeciler” indicates that the mosque was originally a site where dervishes worshipped.

Architectural Features
Takyeciler Camii is a simple yet beautiful example of an Ottoman provincial mosque. Its exterior walls are constructed of stone and brick. The interior is covered by a single large dome, which rises above worshippers like the sky. At the entrance, there is a section known as the “son cemaat yeri,” where those who arrived late for prayer could still perform their worship. Stone carvings adorn the tops of the doors and windows. The minaret was added later and has a square base. Wooden elements, particularly on the upper level known as the “mahfil,” are especially noteworthy.

The Endowment System and Mutual Aid
Takyeciler Camii operated under the Ottoman “vakıf system,” a form of mutual assistance. Under this system, individuals donated land, shops, or income to the mosque. These donations ensured the mosque’s maintenance and enabled aid to be provided to those in need. Officials such as the imam, muezzin, and kayyım received their salaries from these endowment revenues. Thus, the mosque became not only a place of worship but also a center of solidarity and sharing.
Takyeciler Camii Today
Today, Takyeciler Camii remains open for worship. It is protected by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Due to its location in the center of Tokat, it is easily accessible to all. Just as in the past, it continues to be a quiet place of worship where people find peace.
