Time Travel: The Year 1895 ⏳
This unique mosque was constructed approximately 130 years ago. According to the Gregorian calendar, it was built in 1895 with the support of Hasan Tahsin Bey, the district governor of that era. A structure enduring for 130 years reflects the craftsmanship of that time and the durability of its materials. During those years, natural substances such as egg whites were often mixed into the mortar of large buildings to enhance their strength.
What Makes It Unique? ✨
Although the Şahinler Village Mosque has a simple architectural design, it is famous for its interior decorations. Traditional motifs such as the Kaaba, the name of Allah, and the names of the four caliphs are present. However, what makes this mosque exceptional are the vivid and detailed wall paintings found in other areas. These paintings were executed on dry plaster using a technique called "kalemişi," employing earth pigments.

Landscapes and Fruits on the Walls 🖼️
The interior walls and ceiling of the mosque are adorned with paintings depicting a variety of intriguing subjects:
Landscape Paintings: The walls feature scenes of the natural surroundings of the village, including hills and mountains. There is even a fictional depiction of a city with the Bosporus and ships, reflecting the artist’s personal yearnings or memories of places seen during travels.
Fruit and Nature Paintings: The murals include various fruits such as figs, grapes, watermelons, and pineapples, alongside colorful flowers and olive leaves. These intricate details transform the mosque into something akin to an art gallery. The use of such figurative elements in mosques is uncommon in Anatolian artistic tradition.
The Secret of the Paintings 🎨
Some of the wall paintings may have been created by a traveling Greek artist familiar with Western painting techniques. These works incorporate Western artistic methods such as perspective (a technique for conveying depth and distance) and light and shadow. The colors of the paintings have retained their vibrancy over the centuries due to the use of natural root pigments and egg whites as binding agents.
