How Do Space Stations Work?

The International Space Station (ISS) is the largest science laboratory in space! Astronauts live there, conduct experiments, and orbit Earth 16 times a day. The ISS was built through the joint efforts of different countries and functions like a massive spacecraft.

Astronauts perform scientific experiments, grow plants, and study how their bodies change in microgravity. They also exercise, eat meals, and communicate with Earth. Their daily routines are highly planned because every second matters!

Everything floats in the space station! Astronauts do not use spoons while eating because food drifts through the air. Water is consumed in tiny bubbles, and they sleep inside special sleeping bags. So life there is quite different!

The ISS gets its power from massive solar panels. Special systems clean and recycle the air so astronauts can breathe. Even water is reused! Every resource in space is extremely valuable, so everything is carefully managed.

Astronauts communicate with scientists on Earth using radio waves and satellites. Sometimes they even have video calls with their families! Although their internet is not as fast as on Earth, they can send messages and access some websites.

Sometimes astronauts leave the space station to perform repairs. This is called a spacewalk! Wearing special spacesuits, they float outside for hours to carry out their work. It is a challenging and thrilling task!
