Fast X, released in 2023, is an American action film. As the tenth main installment of the franchise, the film was internationally promoted under the title Fast X and distributed by Universal Pictures. Produced by Vin Diesel, Neal H. Moritz, Jeff Kirschenbaum, Samantha Vincent, and Justin Lin, it was conceived as the first part of a two-part finale to the series. With its high budget and extensive cast, the production connects thematically to the past of the series while leaving numerous narrative threads open for the subsequent installment.

Plot and Thematic Structure

The narrative centers on Dominic Toretto being targeted by Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa), the son of former adversary Hernan Reyes, who seeks revenge for his father's death in Rio. Dante launches a strategic and psychological campaign against Dominic and his team, leading to their dispersion across various global locations and confrontation with multiple threats.

Key themes explored in the film include the consequences of the past, revenge, parenthood, strategic manipulation, loyalty, and multi-narrative structures. The story emphasizes the long-term impacts of past events while portraying the notion of family in a more fragile and complex manner.

Cast

The film features Vin Diesel (Dominic Toretto), Michelle Rodriguez (Letty Ortiz), Tyrese Gibson (Roman Pearce), Ludacris (Tej Parker), Nathalie Emmanuel (Ramsey), Jordana Brewster (Mia Toretto), John Cena (Jakob Toretto), and Sung Kang (Han Lue). New additions to the cast include Jason Momoa (Dante Reyes) and Brie Larson (Tess). Charlize Theron (Cipher) and Helen Mirren (Queenie Shaw) reprise their roles from previous installments. The ensemble cast bridges both prior films and future storylines.

Direction and Screenplay

Louis Leterrier, who joined the franchise for the first time, directed the film. Known for his work on The Transporter and Now You See Me, Leterrier took over the directorial role early in production following Justin Lin's departure. The screenplay was written by long-time series writer Chris Morgan alongside Dan Mazeau. The narrative is structured around a multi-layered format, situating characters in parallel stories across different geographical contexts, reflecting a crisis network rather than a traditional action arc.

Cinematography and Visual Style

Stephen F. Windon served as director of photography. The film features extensive use of drone shots, handheld camera work, wide-angle lenses, and CGI-assisted sequences. Notably, scenes set in Rome, Portugal, and Antarctica combine digital and practical effects. As characteristic of the franchise, action sequences rely heavily on exaggerated physical choreography. Select scenes also incorporate desaturated color palettes and slow-motion techniques to heighten dramatic intensity.

Locations and Production Design

Filming took place across a wide array of locations, including Rome, London, Portugal, Los Angeles, Vatican City, Antarctica, and Brazil. This geographical diversity allows for the positioning of characters in independent yet thematically interconnected narratives. The production design integrates both culturally specific settings and high-tech environments such as weapons facilities, underground bunkers, and command centers. The vehicles, once again, are outfitted with advanced, modified attack and defense technologies.

Cultural Impact and Box Office Performance

With an estimated production budget of $340 million, Fast X grossed approximately $714 million worldwide. The film maintained the franchise’s international appeal, achieving particularly high viewership in Latin American and Asian markets. Its unresolved conclusion serves to sustain narrative tension ahead of the eleventh installment, leaving key plotlines in suspense.
