While serving as a Gendarmerie Commando Soldier in Tunceli, he was targeted in a terrorist attack on September 18, 2012, on the Bingöl-Muş highway against a military convoy. In this attack, which resulted in the martyrdom of ten soldiers and injuries to seventy others, a bullet striking his body damaged nerves in his spinal cord, causing loss of sensation in his legs and the inability to walk. At the age of 25 during the confrontation, Papağan survived under heavy fire.【4】
His initial medical treatment and care following the attack were provided at the Gülhane Military Medical Academy (GATA). He then underwent an extended rehabilitation process at the TSK Rehabilitation Center. During this period, supported by his family and fellow gazîs, Papağan turned to sports after observing other individuals engaging in physical activity at the center. He identified archery as the most suitable discipline for self-expression and began his professional sports career in this field in 2017.【5】
One year after beginning his archery career, he was selected for the national team in 2018 after winning first place at the Turkish Championships. He achieved his first major international success at the 2022 Para Archery European Championships held in Italy, where he won gold in the men’s compound team event, silver in the individual category, and bronze in the mixed compound team event. In 2023, at the Para Archery World Championships held in the Czech Republic, he won the world championship title in the men’s pair team category, earning a gold medal and securing a quota for the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.【6】
