World Autism Awareness Day

World Autism Awareness Day was designated by the United Nations on 2 April in 2008. This day was established to raise awareness about autism, address challenges related to autism, and promote early diagnosis and intervention. Accordingly, the month of April has been recognized as World Autism Awareness Month, with the goal of organizing activities throughout this period. This initiative aims to emphasize the importance of autism and expand access to early diagnosis and intervention.

The primary purpose of World Autism Awareness Day is to raise public awareness about autism, foster social acceptance of individuals with autism, and enable them to reach their full potential through early diagnosis and intervention. Activities also aim to encourage research and contribute to the growth of scientific knowledge while ensuring equal access to education, healthcare, and social services for individuals with autism.

Global and local campaigns conducted under the umbrella of World Autism Awareness Day are organized around different themes. For example, the Seed Autism Foundation’s “Light It Up Red” campaign shifts the focus of awareness toward inclusion, aiming to improve understanding and acceptance of individuals with autism in society.

Various campaigns and events are carried out worldwide to increase awareness of autism. As part of these efforts, historic and iconic buildings are illuminated in red to draw public attention to autism, while awareness events, seminars, and informational campaigns are held. On social media, participants have united under a common hashtag to support and promote these initiatives.

In Türkiye, during April, public health directorates and local administrations organize events such as booths, walks, poster and brochure distribution, and film screenings to highlight the importance of autism. The private sector also supports these campaigns by illuminating buildings in red. These activities aim to enhance understanding of the needs of individuals with autism and increase their social acceptance.

World Autism Awareness Day not only seeks to raise awareness but also emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and education. Events and campaigns focus on supporting the participation of individuals with autism in social life and facilitating their access to education and healthcare services.
