The Color of Emotions (Film)

The Color of Emotions (original title: The Help), directed and written by Tate Taylor, is a 2011 drama and historical film adapted from Kathryn Stockett’s novel of the same name. Set in 1960s Jackson, Mississippi, the story revolves around the lives of women whose paths intersect through a secret writing project and the evolving relationships between them.

The film is set in early 1960s Jackson, Mississippi. After graduating from university, Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan returns to her hometown with the goal of becoming a writer and begins contributing articles on domestic life to a local newspaper. During this time, she decides to document the experiences of Black domestic workers employed by white families.

Skeeter first approaches Aibileen Clark, a domestic worker in her immediate circle. Over time, other women join the project. This clandestine endeavor carries significant risk within the social structure of the era. The film explores the relationships that develop around the writing project and the interactions among the women involved.
