Talk as Much as Your Husband (Film)

Kocan Kadar Konuş is a Turkish romantic comedy film released in 2015, directed by Kıvanç Baruönü and adapted from the novel of the same name by Şebnem Burcuoğlu. Produced by BKM Film, the movie humorously examines the societal expectations placed on women regarding marriage in contemporary Turkish society.

The film’s protagonist, Efsun, is a young woman approaching age 30 who faces constant pressure from her family for not being married. Caught between her family’s traditional views on finding a husband and her modern lifestyle, Efsun’s life takes an unexpected turn when she reunites with Sinan, her high school sweetheart. Forced to adopt her family’s conventional methods of pursuing marriage, Efsun’s experiences during this period are portrayed throughout the film with a blend of comedic and critical scenes.

Filming took place in Istanbul. The production process was accelerated by BKM Film following the strong public interest in Şebnem Burcuoğlu’s novel, and Kıvanç Baruönü was appointed as director. The screenplay was adapted faithfully to the book under the supervision of Şebnem Burcuoğlu. Jean Paul Seresin served as cinematographer, while Çağrı Türkkan handled the editing.

The film centers on the pressures surrounding societal expectations of marriage for women. Themes such as family structure, traditional values, the place of women in modern society, and individual freedom are explored through humor. The characters evolve through these conflicts, and the narrative takes on a structure that reflects the cultural tension between tradition and modernity.

The film’s total production budget has not been publicly disclosed. However, during its opening weekend in Türkiye, it attracted approximately 203,000 viewers, marking a strong debut. Over the course of its theatrical run, the film reached a total of 1,211,488 viewers and earned 14,092,353 TL at the Turkish box office.

The film Kocan Kadar Konuş did not win any awards from major national or international award ceremonies. However, it received significant attention from Turkish audiences and was frequently listed among the year’s best romantic comedies by local media outlets. Due to its strong box office performance, the film paved the way for its sequel, Kocan Kadar Konuş: Diriliş.
