Svalbard Global Seed Vault

Svalbard Global Seed Vault is a seed bank located on the Svalbard Islands in Norway’s Arctic region, established to ensure global food security. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault was established in 2008 by the Norwegian government in collaboration with the Norwegian Ministry of Agriculture and Food, the Global Crop Diversity Trust (Crop Trust), and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The vault was designed to function as an insurance policy for global food security. Its strategic location provides a natural freezing environment due to Svalbard’s remoteness and cold climate, enabling seeds to be stored for long periods without deterioration. The facility is situated within a mountain cavity and constructed to endure for up to 1.5 billion years.

The primary purpose of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault is to preserve global agricultural biodiversity and safeguard it against future catastrophic scenarios. The vault stores seeds that would be used if agricultural production were reduced or completely lost due to natural disasters, wars, climate change, or other adverse conditions. Seeds are maintained at a constant temperature of -18°C within the vault’s cold environment, enabling long-term preservation.

The vault accepts samples collected by national and international agricultural organizations, ensuring the preservation of each seed’s diversity and uniqueness. Each seed package serves the dual purpose of conserving biological diversity and securing the continuity of agricultural production. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault houses over one million seed samples intended for use in various agricultural systems. These seeds include varieties of wheat, rice, maize, legumes, vegetables, and fruits. Each seed sample has been selected according to the growing environments and climatic conditions for which it is suited and categorized to meet the needs of agricultural communities worldwide. Seeds stored in the vault can enable the regrowth of species that have been lost due to previous planting cycles or natural disasters.

The vault is located in the high mountainous terrain of Svalbard and utilizes a natural cooling system. Since becoming operational in 2008, the facility has rapidly expanded its capacity to accommodate a growing number of seed samples. It is situated within a mountain cavity 120 meters deep, with limited accessibility, enhancing both physical and digital security. The interior is protected by a digital security network, and access is restricted exclusively to authorized personnel. The vault has been engineered to withstand all types of disasters, and its underground environment maintains the low temperatures necessary to prevent seed deterioration.
