Sun and Shadow (Book)

Sun and Shadow is a collection that showcases the mastery of Luigi Pirandello as a short story writer, offering powerful analyses of the individual’s inner world. The book comprises selected short stories from a planned 24-volume collection intended to encompass all of the author’s tales. This anthology, translated into Turkish by Feridun Timur, was published in 2022 by Dergâh Yayınları.

The stories in the work reveal moments of personal and social fracture through small fragments of everyday life. Pirandello’s texts are intense narratives that go beyond the classical short story form, questioning the psychological conflicts, issues of belonging, and fragmentation of identity characteristic of the modern individual.

The narratives in the book are presented with thematic unity. The central concern in Pirandello’s stories is the mutable nature of human beings and their problematic relationship with their environment. Characters alienate themselves from the roles imposed upon them by society, striving to survive through internal defense mechanisms constructed against the external world. This process renders visible the individual’s inner disintegration and psychological turmoil.

In the work, the metaphor of “sun” represents illumination, hope, visibility, and clarity, while “shadow” signifies obscurity, introversion, hidden aspects, and repression. This opposition forms the fundamental metaphorical tension that defines the atmosphere of the stories.

In Pirandello’s narration, internal conflicts take precedence over external events. Therefore, it is difficult to speak of a classical plot structure in these stories. Time and space are used flexibly, shaped by the characters’ mental flows. The author blurs the boundaries between reality and fiction, constantly prompting the reader to question perception and truth.

Pirandello’s literary approach relies on a dramatic narrative style to reveal the fragmented nature of the individual. His characters are constructed through internal monologues, stream of consciousness, and inner dialogues. The author’s language is simple and clear, yet this simplicity does not obscure the multi-layered psychological intensity of the content.

Using the short story form to reflect the psychological states of his characters, Pirandello traces the traces of different social roles, masks, and personality divisions in each tale. Identity multiplicity, rather than identity unity, is adopted as the fundamental approach. In this regard, Pirandello is regarded as one of the pioneers of modernist literature emerging at the beginning of the 20th century.

Luigi Pirandello, awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1934, produced significant works in modern theater and the short story genre. The stories in Sun and Shadow reflect his philosophical approach to the inner conflicts of the individual as expressed through the short story form.

Pirandello argues that human beings have no fixed identity; rather, they are entities that continuously transform according to social conditions, perceptions, time, and relationships. Thus, the work is not merely a collection of stories but also a literary document on the history of individual consciousness.

The ruptures of reality, the multiplicity of perspectives on events, and the fragmentation of the subject evident in Pirandello’s short fiction have served as a model for subsequent generations of modernist writers. Alongside authors such as Albert Camus, Jorge Luis Borges, and Franz Kafka, Pirandello is counted among the most influential fictional writers of the 20th century.

The Turkish translation of the book is the result of Feridun Timur’s longstanding engagement with Pirandello’s works, which began in the 1950s. Notably highlighted by Nurullah Ataç, the translation is distinguished by its success in preserving the emotional depth and narrative simplicity of the original text. The 421-page volume was published by Dergâh Yayınları in 2022. Printed in standard book format, this edition aims to offer readers a text of both academic and literary quality.
