Sultan Baba Türbesi

Sultan Baba Türbesi is a single-chamber tomb structure from the Ottoman period, located in the Tokatlı locality of Değirmendere Örcün Village, in the Gölcük district of Kocaeli Province. It is built on an elevated stone platform atop a hill surrounded by cypress trees.

The exact construction date of the tomb has not been definitively documented; however, it is recorded in the cultural inventory as an Ottoman-era structure from the 18th–19th centuries. The tomb is designed as a single-chamber space, containing a wooden chest associated with a figure known as “Sultan Baba” and a decree dated H.1203 (A.D. 1787). The surrounding area functions as a cemetery (hazire), with gravestones positioned adjacent to the structure.

The tomb is registered in the inventory of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism as a structure with “Monumental” protection status. Despite its protected status, environmental improvement initiatives have been implemented to make the site accessible to visitors.

As of 2021, local government and municipal authorities undertook landscaping works around the tomb to transform the area into a recreational space. These efforts included the construction of walking paths, seating areas, green space arrangements, and accessibility features for people with disabilities. Picnic tables, camel shelters, and automated irrigation systems were also installed as part of these improvements.

The location of the tomb is situated within a rural settlement area and is accessible by private vehicle via Değirmendere. With the environmental improvements, the site has been functionalized not only as a destination for visitation but also as a cultural-tourism and recreational area.

Sultan Baba Türbesi is registered for its architectural and historical significance as one of the few surviving single-chamber Ottoman-era tombs in the region. Visitor numbers have increased following the environmental enhancements, strengthening its role in tourism and local cultural life. The continuity of its protected status and the compatibility of the improvements with the structure’s original features support its value as cultural heritage.
