Where Does It Come From?
Çelik çomak is an ancient game. It is played in many regions of Anatolia and has been passed down from Central Asian Turkic culture to the present day. Similar games are played in India under the name “gilli-danda” and in England as “tip-cat”.
How Is It Played?
- Players determine turns or form teams.
- The short stick (çelik) is placed in a small hole or between two stones.
- The long stick (çomak) is used to strike the bottom of the çelik, launching it into the air, and then striking it again to send it farther.
- The opposing team tries to catch the çelik while it is in the air.
- If the çelik falls to the ground, the distance between the starting point and where it landed is measured. Each çomak length equals one point.
