Two years have passed since Peter Parker gained his extraordinary powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider and began fighting crime. Peter struggles to balance his university life with his double life as Spider-Man, faces financial difficulties, and is portrayed as a threat by the Daily Bugle newspaper. In his personal life, he is emotionally distressed because his beloved Mary Jane Watson is engaged to John Jameson, the son of her boss, and his closest friend Harry Osborn holds Spider-Man responsible for the death of his father, Norman Osborn. During this stressful period, Peter’s abilities begin to weaken physically, leading him to decide to abandon his Spider-Man identity in pursuit of a normal life. Meanwhile, Harry Osborn, head of Oscorp’s research division, sponsors a fusion experiment led by nuclear scientist Dr. Otto Octavius. During the experiment, the system becomes unstable, Octavius’s wife dies, and the neural chip preserving his mind is destroyed. The four mechanical arms, attached to his spine and powered by artificial intelligence, alter Octavius’s personality and transform him into the criminal known as Doctor Octopus. Seeking tritium to complete his experiment, Doctor Octopus makes a deal with Harry Osborn: in exchange for tritium, Harry demands that Spider-Man be brought to him alive. Doctor Octopus locates Peter Parker and takes Mary Jane hostage. Regaining his powers and motivation, Peter dons his Spider-Man suit and confronts Doctor Octopus atop a moving train. Spider-Man saves the passengers by stopping the train from derailing but is eventually overpowered and knocked unconscious by Doctor Octopus, who delivers him to Harry. Harry is shocked to discover that Spider-Man is his best friend Peter. Peter convinces Harry to help him rescue Mary Jane, and they go to Doctor Octopus’s laboratory. In the final confrontation, Peter reveals his true identity and persuades Octavius to regain control; Octavius, reclaiming his humanity, sacrifices himself to deactivate the dangerous reactor. Afterward, Mary Jane learns Peter’s true identity and chooses him over her fiancé on their wedding day.
