Siirt Clock Tower

Siirt Clock Tower is a structure located on Hükümet Street in the Merkez district of Siirt province. Built in 1975 the tower serves as both a functional and historical element in the city. The clock inside it which dates back approximately 250 years carries a significant trace of Siirt’s past and its origins extend to the Siirt Ulu Camii.

The origins of the Siirt Clock Tower date back to 1905. The original tower was constructed on the eastern facade of the Siirt Ulu Camii by Alaaddin Paşa. However this original yapı was later demolished and replaced by the current clock tower. The tower visible today was built in 1975 beside the former governor’s building on Hükümet Street. The clock installed in the tower has a history of approximately 250 years. This historic clock was previously housed in the Siirt Ulu Camii which is known for its 889 year history. In 1974 a decision was made to construct a new clock tower and the clock was subsequently removed from the Ulu Camii and relocated to the new tower.

The clock retains an Ottoman-era mechanism and has continued to function without interruption until the present day. Maintained and repaired regularly for three generations by the same family the clock is an important part of Siirt’s cultural heritage. The current tower built in 1975 features a simple architectural design. Its primary function is timekeeping and through the historic clock it contains it serves as a bridge between geçmiş and bugün. Located in a prominent position within Siirt’s urban fabric the tower stands out for both its historical value and its continued functionality.
