Robbie Coltrane, born Anthony Robert McMillan on 30 October 1950 in Rutherglen, Scotland, was the son of Jean Ross Howie, a pianist, and Ian Baxter McMillan, a doctor and lawyer. He received the first part of his education at Glenalmond College and later studied painting at the Glasgow School of Art. His interest in the arts led him first to visual arts and then to the stage.

Coltrane’s acting career began in 1978 with the play The Slab Boys, staged at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh. In the 1980s he gained recognition on television through appearances in the comedy programmes The Comic Strip Presents and Alfresco. In 1987 he played opposite Emma Thompson in the series Tutti Frutti, earning his first BAFTA nomination.

Between 1993 and 1996, Coltrane portrayed criminal psychologist Dr. Edward “Fitz” Fitzgerald in the ITV series Cracker. This role became a turning point in his career, earning him three consecutive BAFTA Awards for Best Actor. Coltrane won widespread acclaim not only from audiences but also from critics for this performance.

Coltrane also took on significant roles in cinema. He became particularly well known for his portrayal of Valentin Zukovsky in the James Bond series. He appeared as this character in the 1995 film GoldenEye and the 1999 film The World Is Not Enough. His performance, blending dramatic and comedic elements, brought a distinctive tone to the Bond universe.

Perhaps Robbie Coltrane’s most widely recognized role was that of half-giant Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter film series. He appeared in all eight films from 2001 to 2011. Hagrid’s imposing physique, loyalty and kindness were perfectly embodied by Coltrane’s performance, securing a lasting place in the hearts of millions of fans worldwide. He often expressed how much he cherished being remembered for this role.

In 2006, Queen Elizabeth II awarded him the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his contributions to the performing arts. In 2011, BAFTA Scotland honored him with the award for “Contribution to Cinema.” In the later stages of his career, he starred in the series National Treasure, earning another BAFTA nomination. He also provided voice work for animated films such as The Tale of Despereaux and Brave.

Robbie Coltrane died on 14 October 2022 in Larbert, Scotland, at the age of 72. His acting career, and especially his portrayal of Hagrid, have ensured that his name remains frequently recalled in the history of cinema.
