Devrim Arabaları is a 2008 Turkish historical drama film directed and produced by Tolga Örnek, with a screenplay written by Tolga Örnek and Murat Dişli. The film focuses on the production process of Turkey’s first domestically manufactured automobile, the “Devrim,” and the struggles of the 23 engineers involved in the project against technical, political, and social obstacles.

The film begins after the Automotive Industry Congress held in Ankara on 16 June 1961, when President Cemal Gürsel issues a directive to produce an automobile using entirely domestic resources. The task is assigned to TCDD (Turkish State Railways). For the engineers of the time, this mission was seen as a “challenge” to the Turkish people’s industrial potential.

Operating under limited conditions at the Eskişehir Railway Workshops (Cer Atölyesi), the team has only 129 days to complete the vehicle in time for the 29 October Republic Day celebrations. The film chronologically depicts this arduous process—from engine casting and transmission design to bodywork and political pressure—while also portraying the obstacles created by those who sought the project’s failure.

Taner Birsel (Gündüz): The project’s chief coordinator and team leader. He embodies a calm, rational character whose unwavering commitment to engineering ethics holds the team together.

Selçuk Yöntem (Latif): One of the most experienced members of the team. Initially skeptical about the project’s success, he becomes the backbone of production through his technical expertise.

The film received acclaim for its authentic period atmosphere and collective acting performance. At the 14th Sadri Alışık Acting Awards, in a rare decision, the “Best Male Actor” award was presented collectively to seven lead actors—Taner Birsel, Ali Düşenkalkar, Halit Ergenç, Altan Gördüm, Serhat Tutumluer, Onur Ünsal, and Selçuk Yöntem—rather than to a single individual. Additionally, the film won awards for “Best Screenplay” and “Best Art Direction” at the 3rd Yeşilçam Awards.
